The modern technical outerwear conversation is largely a conversation about membranes and finishes. Two names dominate: Gore-Tex on the membrane end and Schoeller in the woven stretch softshell space. Understanding the difference between a membrane and a surface treatment is the foundational distinction.
Gore-Tex: The Membrane
Gore-Tex is a brand name for expanded PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) — the same material as non-stick cookware, stretched into a membrane with approximately 9 billion pores per square inch. Each pore is approximately 20,000 times smaller than a water droplet but 700 times larger than a water vapor molecule. This physical asymmetry is what makes waterproof-breathable fabrics possible: liquid water cannot pass in, but moisture vapor (sweat) can pass out.
Product Lines
Gore has organized their consumer-facing products into a hierarchy that reflects real performance differences:
Gore-Tex Active — The highest breathability in the line. 3-layer construction bonded as a single unit. Designed for high-output activities where moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) matters most. Lighter weight, less abrasion resistance.
Gore-Tex Pro — Prioritizes durability. Heavier face fabrics, reinforced zones. Used by Arc’teryx, Norrøna, Patagonia in their most demanding outerwear. The face fabric weight is the primary durability variable here.
Gore-Tex Paclite — A 2.5-layer construction (no bonded backer) designed for packable, lightweight applications. Less abrasion resistant than 3L constructions; the membrane is exposed on the interior, giving the characteristic smooth feel.
Gore-Tex Infinium — Not waterproof. A separate product line using PTFE technology for wind resistance, water resistance, and stretch without the full WPB membrane system. Used in gloves, liners, and transition pieces.
2-Layer vs. 3-Layer Construction
In a 2L shell, the membrane is laminated to the face fabric but not the backer. A separate hanging liner is used inside. 3L construction bonds all three components (face / membrane / backer) into a single unit. 3L is more expensive, lighter for equivalent warmth, and wears better over time. The laminated backer in 3L also prevents the membrane from stretching against a liner, which can compromise breathability.
The DWR Problem
Gore-Tex is frequently confused with DWR. The membrane is what provides true waterproofing. DWR — Durable Water Repellency — is a surface chemical treatment that causes water to bead and roll off the face fabric rather than saturate it. Saturated face fabric doesn’t penetrate to the membrane (which remains waterproof), but wet face fabric is cold and heavy. Regular DWR refresh (heat from tumble drying, or Nikwax-type treatment) is essential maintenance that most outerwear owners skip.
Schoeller: Engineered Face Fabrics
Where Gore-Tex is a membrane technology, Schoeller is a Swiss mill producing engineered woven and knit face fabrics. Their products are more diverse and less legible to consumers, but they define the upper tier of softshell construction.
Nanosphere
Schoeller’s signature surface treatment — a lotus-effect DWR that works at the fiber level rather than as a topcoat. More durable than spray-on DWR treatments and more resistant to wash degradation. Nanosphere-treated fabrics shed water aggressively without sacrificing breathability or hand-feel.
Schoeller-dryskin
A bi-elastic face fabric using Nanosphere treatment. Mechanically water-resistant through tight weave construction, not through a membrane. The result: excellent water resistance for moderate precipitation with significantly better breathability and comfort than a membraned shell. The trade-off is that sustained heavy rain will eventually wet out.
Used extensively by Outlier (their INJEX and Bombtwill constructions borrow from Schoeller’s engineering philosophy), Acronym, and a range of European technical brands.
Schoeller-dynamic
4-way stretch, warp-knit construction. Primary application is in technical pants and athletic outerwear where range of motion matters more than waterproofing. The fabric is often finished with Nanosphere or other treatments. Massimo Alba, Norrøna, and Arc’teryx have used Schoeller-dynamic in various pant constructions.
c_change and NanoSphere
Schoeller’s c_change is a climate-adaptive membrane that changes its structure with temperature — tightening in cold, opening in heat — providing passive breathability modulation. Less common than Gore-Tex but used in technical mid-layers where static breathability ratings don’t tell the full story.
Pertex and Polartec
Pertex — A range of ultralight ripstop fabrics from the UK. Pertex Quantum and Shield are common in down insulation outers and lightweight shell garments. Less waterproofing than Gore-Tex; the trade-off is weight and packability.
Polartec — Dominates the fleece and thermal mid-layer space. Their Power Stretch and Power Air constructions are the technical benchmarks for bonded fleece. Polartec Alpha (open-structure insulation) is used in active insulation pieces where dump-able warmth matters.
Honest Context
The WPB membrane market is often over-specified. A well-designed Schoeller softshell will outperform a poorly-cut Gore-Tex shell in nearly all real-world conditions because fit and venting design matter more than MVTR ratings in practice. Choose the membrane when you need reliable protection in sustained wet conditions. Choose the softshell when you need comfort, packability, and breathability in variable conditions with intermittent rain.
