Alpaca comes from the same Andean high-altitude tradition as cashmere but is structurally distinct in ways that matter practically. Where sheep’s wool is a protein fiber with scales that interlock — responsible for felting and, at coarser grades, irritation — alpaca has a smoother, more hollow fiber with no lanolin and a different surface chemistry.

Huacaya vs. Suri

The two breeds of alpaca produce fundamentally different fibers:

Huacaya is the common breed — about 90% of all alpaca production. It produces a fluffy, crimped fiber that felts and processes like fine wool. It spins into a light, bulky yarn with good loft and excellent insulation. Most alpaca knitwear you encounter is huacaya.

Suri is the rarer breed, producing a long, silky, luster fiber with no crimp. Suri fleece drapes and shines; it behaves more like silk than wool and is typically blended with other fibers for performance. Garments using suri have a distinctive cool luster and exceptional softness, but less inherent warmth than huacaya at equivalent GSM.

No Lanolin

Sheep produce lanolin — a waxy natural oil in their fleece that waterproofs the fiber and accounts for the “wool smell” some people find unpleasant. Alpaca produces no lanolin. This has several downstream effects: alpaca fibers are naturally hypoallergenic (lanolin is the primary irritant for wool-sensitive people), they have a cleaner wet smell, and they require less processing to clean.

Warmth and Hollow Fiber

Alpaca fiber is microscopically hollow. This air core is what makes it exceptionally warm for its weight — roughly three times as warm as equivalent sheep’s wool. A lightweight 200 GSM alpaca mid-layer performs in conditions that would require a much heavier wool garment. The tradeoff is that hollow fibers compress and can lose loft under sustained pressure (like a pack waist belt), though they recover well.

Softness Grading

Like Merino, alpaca is graded by fiber diameter:

  • Baby Alpaca — 18–22μ. The label is misleading; it refers to the finest fiber sheared from an alpaca’s first clip, not from young animals. Extremely soft, next-to-skin viable.
  • Royal Alpaca — ≤19μ. The highest commercial grade. Comparable to fine cashmere in hand-feel.
  • Superfine — ≤24μ. Still very soft; the workable range for most garment applications.
  • Standard — 25–32μ. More utilitarian; often used in outer layers where softness matters less than durability.

Odor Resistance

Alpaca performs well against odor but — honest note — not quite at Merino’s level. The protein chemistry is similar, but Merino’s scale structure seems to bind volatile compounds slightly more aggressively in direct comparisons. For a travel sweater worn over a base layer, this distinction is academic. For next-to-skin activity wear, Merino has the edge.

Practical Notes

Alpaca pills more readily than Merino at comparable weights, particularly in huacaya blends. This is a natural consequence of the fiber’s smooth surface and low crimp. Pill removal with a fabric shaver resets the garment well, but it’s a maintenance consideration worth knowing. Blends with silk (common in luxury knitwear) reduce pilling and increase the drape and surface sheen at the cost of some warmth.

Brands working seriously with alpaca include Naadam, Peruvian Connection, and various smaller Andean workshops. In the technical outerwear space, Patagonia has incorporated alpaca into select fleece formats. For pure luxury knitwear, ESENCIAL and Incalpaca produce high-grade constructions directly from Peruvian mills.
